At the end your WordPress posts are in this blog with their categories, tags, authors, photos and SEO, and visitors of the old addresses land on the new ones.
Before you start
You need permission to write posts, to manage categories, tags and authors, and to add media, on a plan that includes the blog. If your old site's domain will point here, import before you move it, so the photos can still be fetched from the old site.
Steps
- In WordPress, open Tools → Export, choose All content and press Download Export File.
- Here, open Blog Posts and press Import from WordPress.
- Press Choose the export file and pick the file WordPress saved.
- Check Your WordPress site's address, then choose New posts are (As in WordPress or All drafts) and Credit the posts to.
- If your WordPress site changed its category or tag address (WordPress, Settings → Permalinks), enter the parts it uses, then press Update the preview.
- Read the preview: the counts, what will be created, the notes for each post and the old addresses that will not be redirected.
- Press Start the import.
What you will see
A progress count while posts come in, then The posts are in with how many were created, updated and left alone, and how many old addresses now lead here. Photos keep downloading after that; the counts of photos waiting, fetched and failed update on the same page, which you can leave.
If something goes wrong
- The file could not be read: the export was cut short, or it is not a WordPress export. Export again from Tools → Export and upload the whole file.
- Photos failed because the old site is gone or its domain now points here: use Fetch again, from this address, or upload a ZIP of the old site's
wp-content/uploadsfolder. - Start the import (0 posts) stays off and every post says Already here: every post in the file was imported before. Choose Posts imported before: Update from the file to update them from it.
- A post built with Elementor looks plain: page builders keep their layout to themselves. The post came in as a draft with its text and photos; lay it out again here before you publish it.
