You will have chosen the languages visitors can pick from, and the one they see first.
Before you start
You need the site-settings Edit permission.
Steps
- Open Site Settings and choose Language & Format.
- In the language list, tick every language the site should offer.
- Choose the default language from the enabled ones.
- If the default language should be served without a prefix (
/aboutinstead of/en/about), switch on Clean URLs. - Press Save Languages.
What you will see
Visitors whose preferred language cannot be detected get the default language. Other enabled languages keep their prefix in the address. The SMS and Payments tabs now suggest providers for the new default language.
If something goes wrong
- At least one language must stay enabled, so the last one cannot be unticked.
- If you untick the language that is currently the default, the default moves to the first language still ticked. Check the choice before saving.
- If a provider you expected is missing from the SMS or Payments tab, check the default language first: the lists depend on it.
After you add a language
Nothing is translated yet. Follow "How do I add a second language to my site?" to translate the pages and content and to decide what visitors see in the meantime.
