How do I change the media settings?

You will have changed how uploads are handled for the whole site.

Before you start

You need the media settings permission and a plan that includes editing media metadata.

Steps

1. Open Media Library and press Settings.
2. Set Maximum upload size (MB) (1 to 200).
3. Switch Generate image variants on or off.
4. Switch Optimise images on upload on to convert JPEG and PNG to WebP and scale them; then set Largest image side (px) (0 converts without resizing).
5. Switch Require alt text on if every file's details must have it.
6. Press Save settings.

What you will see

"Media settings saved." and the window closes. New uploads follow the new rules; existing files are not changed.

If something goes wrong

• Without the settings permission the window says the library could not be loaded.
• Optimised WebP images do not show in some email clients such as Outlook; payment receipts and print artwork are never converted.
• A file between your limit and 200 MB is refused by the server with "File is too large".
• Which file types are allowed cannot be changed here; it can only be narrowed through the API.
