How do I add the Language Switcher to my site?

Put a Language Switcher in the header so visitors can move to the same page in another language.

You will have a switcher in the header that takes a visitor to the same page in another language.

Before you start

The site needs at least two languages. With only one, the switcher shows nothing. You need permission to write content.

Steps

  1. Open Content → Global Regions, press Edit Header and select where it should go.
  2. Add the Language Switcher element (it sits with the Menu in the Elements panel).
  3. Choose how it looks: Inline links or Drop-down.
  4. Choose Language names: In their own language, In English or Codes (EN, FA).
  5. Choose When a page is not translated: Leave the language out, Open its home page or Open the page in the site's language.
  6. Turn on Show flags to put a small flag before each language's name. English, Persian, Arabic, French, Spanish and German have one (the United Kingdom, Iran, Saudi Arabia, France, Spain and Germany); a language without a flag shows its name alone.
  7. Optionally set an Accessible name (the label a screen reader reads; it is translatable, and empty means "Language").
  8. Save, then Publish.

What you will see

Each language is a real link. The language being shown is marked as current. A visitor who clicks stays on the same page when it exists in that language. On the store, courses, booking and community pages the switcher keeps working as you move between pages.

If something goes wrong

  • A page you excluded from a language is not offered in it, whatever you chose above.
  • On the customer account, student area and other pages with no language in their address, the other languages open their home page, or are left out when you chose Leave the language out.
  • In the Studio canvas the element shows two sample languages: the real list appears on the site.
  • Without it, visitors can still reach a language by an address, but nothing on the page offers it.
