Marketing

Campaigns go to a segment, minus suppressed addresses; what the numbers mean, how fast mail leaves, and what the module does not do.

Email and SMS campaigns, the audiences they go to, and the list of people who must not be written to.

Three parts

A campaign is the message. A segment is a saved set of conditions that picks the audience. The suppression list removes people who opted out, bounced or complained. Recipients are worked out again every time you send, and the suppression list always applies; no segment or campaign can get around it.

Where the audience comes from

Customers, contacts and leads, each switched on or off on the campaign (Audience scope; at least one stays on). They are merged and de-duplicated by email address. A segment has no source of its own; it only holds conditions, all of which must match, and a condition on a field that a group does not have excludes that whole group.

What the numbers mean

  • Sent is the number queued when you pressed send, not the number delivered.
  • Opened and Clicked count every tracked hit, repeats included, so they can exceed the audience. The dashboard open rate counts unique opens, so the two disagree.
  • Opens are a hidden picture and undercount; they also depend on the tracking switch in Settings.
  • The count beside a segment and the "Reaches N people" line on a campaign are estimates: they include people with no email address and people on the suppression list. The real send is smaller.

How fast mail leaves

Campaign mail waits in the same queue as every other message the site sends, 20 a minute. A 5,000-person campaign takes about four hours, and password-reset mail queued behind it waits too. Status moves from Sending to Sent only when someone opens the campaigns list or a campaign; if some messages failed but any were delivered it still reads Sent.

What it does not do

No daily send cap (the setting is stored and ignored). No retry of a failed campaign. No unsubscribe for SMS. No A/B tests. Bounces and complaints are suppressed automatically only when the Resend webhook is configured.

Who can do what

Each screen has its own view permission. Creating, editing, scheduling and sending all need the same write permission; there is no separate send permission. Every screen shows its buttons to anyone who can open it and the server refuses the rest.
