How do I sell a digital download?

You will have a product whose files customers download after paying.

Before you start

The file should be in the Media Library, or hosted at a URL you control.

Steps

1. Open the product and switch on Downloadable (and Virtual if nothing ships).
2. Open the Downloads tab and press + Add File.
3. Enter the File Name and choose Media Library or External URL, not both.
4. Set a Download Limit and Expiry (days) if you want them; blank means unlimited.
5. Press save in the dialog, and Save the product.

What you will see

When an order is paid, each file gets a secure link in the customer's order, with the expiry counted from that moment.

If something goes wrong

• Links stop working for refunded, cancelled or failed orders, and return if the order is reinstated.
• Removing a file does not take back links already issued.
• The buyer sees "Link expired" or "Download limit reached" in their order once a limit is hit.
