You will have an estimate where the client chooses add-ons, with a discount on a line, on the whole estimate, or both.
Before you start
The estimate must be a draft, sent or viewed one. Accepted, declined, expired and converted estimates cannot be edited.
Steps
- Open the estimate in the editor (Edit, or New estimate).
- For an add-on, add the line and tick Optional on it.
- To discount one line, press + Discount under it, choose Amount or Percent, enter the value and, if you like, a reason.
- To discount the whole estimate, use Estimate discount below the lines the same way. It comes off the subtotal, after the line discounts and before tax.
- Check the summary: items before discounts, item discounts, subtotal, estimate discount, tax and total. It also says how many optional items the client can opt out of.
- Save.
What you will see
The client sees every optional line ticked and can untick any of them. Each discounted line shows its discount and reason, and the estimate discount sits in the totals. The total updates as they untick lines (a percentage discount follows the lines they keep), and what they keep is what they accept. The PDF shows the same.
If something goes wrong
- Your own total includes the optional lines, so the accepted total can be lower than the one you sent.
- A discount cannot be larger than the line, or the subtotal, it applies to; an amount off the whole estimate must also fit the items the client cannot remove, so they can still accept after unticking every optional one. The summary says so and Save stays disabled until you lower it.
- An estimate made before discounts existed may still have a separate discount row. It keeps counting as before (it lowers the subtotal) and becomes part of the invoice discount when the estimate converts; new discounts go on a line or on the estimate.
- There is no per-line tax.
