How do I choose what visitors see for a page that is not translated?

Decide whether the Language Switcher hides, redirects or still offers a language for a page you have not translated, and how to remove a page from one language.

You will have decided what a visitor in a language sees, and what search engines are told, for a page that exists only in the default language.

Before you start

You need permission to write content. The choice is made on the Language Switcher in your header region, which you edit in the Studio.

What happens if you do nothing

A page with no translation in a language still opens at that language's address. The visitor reads the default language's words inside that language's menus and buttons. Behind the scenes:

For a language where the page is not translated Result
The page opens Yes, with the default language's text
Search engines The address points to the default language's page, and the page is left out of the language links and the sitemap
Screen readers The text is read in the language it is really written in
The Language Switcher Follows the setting below

Steps: what the switcher offers

  1. Open Content → Global Regions and edit the header (or open the page where your Language Switcher is).
  2. Select the Language Switcher and find When a page is not translated.
  3. Choose one:
    • Leave the language out (the default): the language is not offered on that page.
    • Open its home page: the language's link goes to its home page.
    • Open the page in the site's language: the link opens the same page, showing the default language's text.
  4. Save and publish the header.

Steps: remove a page from one language completely

  1. On the Pages list press Translate on the page, and choose the language.
  2. Tick Do not offer this page in this language.
  3. Press Publish. It takes effect when you publish.

What you will see

For an excluded page, visitors in that language get a "not found" page, and search engines and the Language Switcher leave it out. Unticking the box and publishing brings it back.

If something goes wrong

  • Excluding is for pages. Products, courses and other records are not removed from a language this way.
  • A translated page where only some texts are translated is treated as translated: the untranslated texts fall back to the default language's words one by one.
