How do I copy content to another site, or back it up?

Export pages, blog posts, products and media as a zip file, then import it where you need it.

You will have moved content to another install, or kept a copy you can restore.

Before you start

Exporting needs site-settings View plus the read permission of each kind of content. Importing needs Manage plus the write permission of each kind in the file. Only pages, blog posts, products and their media are covered; settings, theme, branding, customers, orders and users are not.

Steps

Export (on the source site)

  1. Open Import & Export and choose the Export tab.
  2. Choose what to export, and export.
  3. Save the zip file you receive. It is not kept on the server.

Import (on the target site)

  1. Open Import & Export and choose the Import tab.
  2. Upload the zip (up to 180 MB).
  3. Choose a mode: Add (new items only), Restore (overwrite with the file's versions) or Copy (new ids, all as drafts).
  4. Press Preview to see what would happen; nothing is written yet.
  5. Press Import.

What you will see

The import runs in the background; you can leave the page. When it finishes the content is in place. If anything fails, everything is rolled back.

If something goes wrong

  • Restore overwrites existing items and saves a safety copy first, offered for download. Download it: safety copies expire after 7 days and jobs after 24 hours (see History).
  • Only one import can run at a time.
  • A file that is not a zip, is over 180 MB, or fails its checks is refused.
