SMS Templates

How do I write a text message in another language?

Write the version of a template for a language that only has the English fallback.

You will have written a text message in a language that had none, so recipients stop receiving English.

Before you start

You need the Manage permission. Only English and Farsi have shipped wording; every other language starts with whatever you write.

Steps

  1. Open SMS Templates and pick the template.
  2. Look at the English version first and note its variables.
  3. Choose the language you want to write.
  4. Write the message, keeping each {{variable}} unchanged.
  5. Check the preview, then press Save.

What you will see

A dot appears for that language. From the next message, recipients in that language get your wording.

If something goes wrong

  • Without your version the system tries the shipped wording, then your English, then the shipped English, then a built-in message.
  • Which language a message uses is decided by the sender: bookings use the guest's language, other messages the site's default, not the language you are editing.
  • Non-Latin text uses more segments than the counter shows; see How do I keep a text message short?
