What does AI translation cost and what are its limits?

What the AI uses, the size limits per run and per day, what needs your plan, and what to do when a limit is reached.

You will know what Translate with AI draws on and how to work within it.

What it uses

  • The AI package of your installation, the same allowance as the other AI features. Each run counts against it. If none is assigned, or it is used up, you are told ("AI usage quota exceeded" or that no AI package is assigned).
  • A plan feature for machine translation. Without it the button does not work.
  • Your permission to translate what you are translating, as for any translation.

Size limits

  • One run: up to about 60,000 characters of source text. Beyond that: "This is too much text for one AI run. Translate fewer items at a time."
  • One day, per site: up to about 400,000 characters. When reached: "The daily limit for AI translation has been reached. Try again tomorrow." The day follows the database's clock.
  • Only text that needs translating is sent: texts with no translation yet and AI texts whose original changed. Texts a person wrote, media files, addresses and quiz answer keys are never sent.

The figures are the defaults of a standard installation; whoever runs your installation can change them.

Quality checks

Each answer is checked before it is saved: the same tags, every number and unit, every protected term, and a sensible length. One that fails is tried once more, then left empty and counted in the message ("n text(s) could not be translated safely and were left empty"). Nothing wrong is written.

Where the results go

Into the language's draft, marked as AI text. Nothing goes live on a page until you publish it, and unreviewed AI text stays out of search engines. See AI Translation Review.

If something goes wrong

  • "AI translation is not available on this site. Check the AI connection in settings."
  • "The AI service did not answer. Try again in a moment."
  • "There is nothing left to translate here" means everything already has a translation.
